What’s the Difference Between the GMC Sierra 1500 and 2500?

Red 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 driving on rocks

Mequon area shoppers looking for a pickup truck are likely to consider the GMC Sierra 1500 or GMC Sierra 2500, but what’s the difference between the two? If you’re looking to take home your first pickup truck or just interested in learning more, Sommer’s Buick GMC is here to help!

GMC Sierra 1500 vs. GMC Sierra 2500

As your trusted new GMC dealer, we’re here to help you make the right decision. Put simply, the Sierra 1500 is a light-duty pickup truck while the Sierra 2500 is a heavy-duty one. You may even see the name “Sierra 2500 HD”, with the “HD” standing for “heavy duty”.

So if you’re looking for a lighter truck that is more than capable of a lot of jobs, you might want to consider the Sierra 1500. But if you need a more robust truck with increased capacity, the Sierra 2500 is the better choice.

The 2023 Sierra 1500 boasts a best-in-class 4WD Diesel towing capacity of up to 13,000 pounds, while the 2023 Sierra 2500 can tow up to 36,000 pounds when properly equipped. With such a large gap between maximum towing capacities, the truck you should choose depends on what you need out of it.

If you’re constantly hauling or towing, or need a truck for your everyday job, the Sierra 2500 offers more compared to the Sierra 1500. But if you’re looking for your first truck or don’t need to tow as often, the latter is a smart choice, too.

As far as similarities, both trucks offer the world’s first six-function MultiPro Tailgate, which combines six convenient functions to help improve loading, unloading and accessing the cargo bed to make light work of any job.
